Histoire de Babar

This childhood favorite, first published in 1931, is still at the top of my list. See a portfolio of charming illustrations, courtesy of the New Yorker, here.

New Yorkers can also visit the Morgan Library & Museum’s exhibition, "Drawing Babar: Early Drafts and Watercolors." running through January 4th.

Liz and Martin Cont'd

Isn't this photo perfection! We attended their wedding in August, the last of many we went to this summer. Liz thought of everything and it showed through out the night. One special touch were the wedding photos of her relatives placed on shelves in the entry hall. It was just as beautiful, if not more so, in real life. All my love to the bride and groom.

Heather & Alex's Home

There is little more I love than a casual get together with good friends and the home shared by LA in bloom's Heather Taylor and Engaged Observer, Alex De Cordoba, is the perfect space to relax and entertain. Heather was sweet enough to let me shoot some pix of their recently completed living room. More here.

Offensive + Delightful

This great card was waiting on my pillow when I arrived in Denver last week. It was perfect! Last Christmas I sent out a few from the same company to close friends and family and literally cracked myself up. I will be stocking up again this year for sure. Below, a few faves.

May's House Tour

The highlight of my trip to Denver was seeing my girlfriends from high school, Vanessa and May. May moved to Denver about 3 years ago and has created a beautiful home for her and her husband, Charlie.

The master was insanely cozy and ideal for loong days in bed catching up on TV

The guest room furnished with metal bedside tables and a convex mirror from Empiric.

But the wallpapered bathrooms were especially gorgeous and it's no wonder why. May worked for Charlotte Moss before her relocation to Denver and you can definitely see where she found some of her inspiration.

Ladies, thanks for the memories and the countless cocktails! From the lawless streets to the feathered beds I utterly enjoyed every second - even if I can't remember most of them.

The cherry on top was meeting one of my readers, the beautiful KC. Until next time....

Interior Designer Max Gough

Friend, and our part time sales associate, Max Gough, has been creating some beautiful, fresh spaces in his recent years designing interiors.

He moved to the West coast in the spring of 2000, leaving behind him a fledgling New York City dance career and long
east coast winters. Inspired and reinvigorated by the beauty of Southern California he went on to earn separate degrees in Photography and Interior Design.

At the start of his career he had the good fortune to work with notable designers such as
Gary Gibson, D. Crosby Ross, and Martyn Lawrence Bullard. After several years of mentor ship he was ready to strike out on his own. Maximillian Designs was born out of a cross breed of different influences and worlds which now enable him to create unique and sumptuous spaces.
"I feel my own style is discovering what makes my clients happy and pushing them even further to make it the work or
living space of their dreams".

He has completed projects in
Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

Sweet Dreams

another Scheerer!

Or rise and shine.. depending on where you rest your head. I am taking off to see some friends in Denver tomorrow, my first solo mission sans husband since our "big day". Twin beds a thing of the past.

I love visiting my best friends and staying at their homes. Our grown up houses a million miles away from the cubby holes we used to rent, together.

Earthy Inspired Bling

How cute are these autumn accessories?

A necklace such as hers would do the job too..

Terrariums

Recently a client purchased an assortment of glassware for a project. Mostly botanical jars but a few more unusual glass jars of different shapes and sizes as well. I later learned they were all made into different terrariums, mingled throughout the decor.

Materials:
wide mouth glass container
something to cover the jar top such as clear plastic wrap, a pane of glass, or Plexiglas
potting soil
small plants
pea gravel
watering can or spray bottle

Directions:
Select a container for the terrarium. For easy access, choose one that has a wide mouth. A fishbowl or aquarium is a good choice. I used an apothecary jar with a glass top. If your container does not have a lid, you can cover it with clear plastic wrap, a piece of clear Plexiglas or a sheet of glass.

To avoid insect and disease problems wash the gravel with hot water and use top quality, sterile potting soil.

Fill the bottom of the container with about 1 inch of gravel. If you container is especially deep, you may want to use 2 or 3 inches.

Top the gravel with 3 inches of soil.

Now comes the fun part, planting the landscape. When you choose plants, select varieties that all have the same growing requirements ? light, water, and humidity. Slow growers with small leaves are best suited for the confines of a terrarium.

Remove the plants from their pots and plant them in the terrarium just like you would in the garden. Place the taller plants in the back, mid-sized plants in the middle and low growing things like moss toward the front. If possible, keep the foliage away from the sides of the container.

Once you have the plants in place, moisten the soil lightly and put the lid in place.

How often you will need to water your terrarium depends on how tightly the lid fits. A loose fitting lid lets moisture escape. A good indication of when to water is the condensation on the glass. If there is no condensation, water the soil very lightly. If there is heavy condensation, remove the lid to allow the terrarium to air out.

The neat thing about terrariums is that you are only limited by your imagination. Add large rocks to represent craggy mountains or small mirrors for ponds. You can even create a desert landscape with succulents and cacti.

Good Terrarium Plants:
Acorus
African Violets
Creeping Fig
Moss
Maidenhair Spleenwort
Needlepoint Ivy
Oxalis
Peperomia
Prayer Plant
Peacock Moss (Selaginella uncinata)

Sweet Dreams

We cashed in some of our wedding credit (yes, on items returned, sorry!) and bought a featherbed. It is heaven!

Coldwater Canyon Guesthouse

This guesthouse belonging to Dorrie and Paul Markovits was designed by Santa Monica architect Aleks Istanbullu. Granite islands in a pond, reminiscent of a small moat, welcome you to the little glass castle.

Their wall of books so large it demands a ladder! And a plush chair to enjoy them in...

You can see more images and read their story here.
